Every year on 10 December, the world marks International Human Rights Day—a moment to reaffirm the universal truth that all people are born equal in dignity and rights. This year’s commemoration is especially significant, taking place amid unprecedented humanitarian needs, climate shocks, conflict, and widening inequalities.
In this global context, the United Nations has launched the 2026 Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) under the theme “Life by Life”, issuing a powerful call for renewed solidarity and responsibility.
A Global Appeal to Protect Human Rights
The new UN appeal seeks $33 billion to assist people whose basic human rights to safety, food, shelter, education, and protection are under threat. Humanitarian partners will prioritize 87 million people with the most urgent, lifesaving needs, with a wider goal of reaching 135 million people in 50 countries.
In 2025, despite shrinking budgets and increasing attacks on aid workers, humanitarian organizations still managed to reach 98 million people—a reminder that global action makes a measurable difference, life by life.
Human Rights Under Pressure
Across the world, millions face violations of fundamental human rights due to:
- Conflict and insecurity
- Climate-related disasters
- Massive displacement
- Food and economic crises
- Gender-based violence
- Barriers to basic services
For these communities, humanitarian assistance is not just aid—it is a lifeline that restores dignity and protects rights.
Why This Matters for Somalia
Somalia continues to confront overlapping challenges: displacement, drought and floods, insecurity, and economic instability. These crises disproportionately affect:
- Women and girls
- Persons with disabilities
- Elderly and marginalized groups
- Internally displaced families
As a women-led, rights-driven Somali NGO, CRPD stands at the heart of humanitarian and human rights work. Our mission is rooted in ensuring that every person—especially those most at risk—can live with dignity, safety, and respect.
On this Human Rights Day, CRPD reaffirms its commitment to:
- Defending the rights of vulnerable and displaced communities
- Addressing protection risks, including GBV and child rights violations
- Supporting inclusive, accessible humanitarian services
- Advocating for accountability and justice
- Strengthening community resilience through rights-based programming
A Call for Global Solidarity
The UN’s “Life by Life” appeal reminds us that humanitarian action is ultimately about people—one life, one family, one community at a time. As needs grow, so must the world’s collective commitment to human rights and humanitarian principles.
CRPD joins the international community in urging:
- Increased humanitarian funding
- Protection for aid workers
- Equal access to assistance
- Respect for international human rights and humanitarian law
- Stronger partnerships to leave no one behind
